About this creation

"Genetic abominations you say? I trust them with my life. You do not trust an 'abomination' with something that important. I recommend taking back your comment boy, before I remove your tongue."

Jonathon Ferris; Plainwarden

Amongst the members of the Unified Lycan Coalition's ranks there exists a unique type of soldier. A soldier who prefers the solitude in being left alone, a soldier who avoids contact with their peers.

These soldiers are the White Cowls, the ULC's scouting and stealth troopers.

However, those that truly excel within this group have a chance to go beyond and join the ranks of the ULC's elite forces in scouting, exploring and espionage; the Order of the Plainwardens.

Plainwardens are those that do as their name suggests; they explore, watch and guard the plains that make up the ULC nation. However, they need to be highly mobile in order to do this. That's where the boffins in the ULC's science division come into play.

Each Plainwarden is assigned to a pair of massive beasts nicknamed 'Vargs', after the Norse mythological term. Vargs are a genetic hybrid of both Grey wolf and Polar bear DNA, resulting in animals of both impressive size, speed and endurance.

Vargs are also genetically enhanced during their upbringing, giving them the strength to run for hours on end without stopping. Their natural healing factor has also been strengthened, allowing most Varg's to shrug off small arms fire at close range.

In terms of weapons, the Vargs have their claws and teeth which (depending on the Plainwarden) may be enhanced with metal gauntlets or mouth guards.

However, all of these genetic upgrades do come at a cost. Despite their physical strength, Varg's aren't very good at carrying heavy weights for extended periods of time. This means that Plainwarden's have to pack light whilst travelling.

This is also one of the reasons why a Plainwarden typically rides with two Vargs. Whilst one Varg is perfectly adequate for a single rider, the second is free if the Plainwarden needs to take back a prisoner or a wounded comrade.

It's also never a bad idea to have a back up Varg in case of injury or fatigue in the other animal.

Another reason is for companionship. Whilst Plainwarden's are often made up of those who prefer their own company, their life does tend to get lonely.

This is one aspect of Varg culture that few ever have the privilege of seeing. Once a Varg team has accepted their Plainwarden, the bond between the three is a precious thing indeed.

Whilst the world may look and see only an abomination, the Plainwarden's see only friends.

Ok, so my companion model is made up of a few more than the minimum ten pieces (obviously), but just in case here's the parts that make up it's arm.

Each Varg narrowly fits into the 12 x 8 slot, though it is harder to photograph.

There can be a smidge of overhang (depending on where certain pieces are positioned), but it's minimal, and there's nothing specified in the SPEC's to say that overhang isn't allowed.

Still, I didn't want to push it...

Another photo to better show the Varg fitting into the length spec.

And one more for the width spec. Thankfully, this is a little easier to show.

The Plainwarden Jonathon Ferris silencing an enemy sentry on the outskirts of ULC territory. Due to it's island nature, the nation has been dealing with the local militia bands that have sprung up to try and take back their homeland.

When the Plainwarden's find these small nests of rebels... things tend to get messy.

After taking care of the sentry, Jonathon sneaks forward to a small supply depot near a militia outpost.

This is also when he activates the White Cowl's most useful piece of equipment; nanofibres woven into the cowl and cloak of the wearer that can change colours to better match the environment.

Jonathon plants the bomb behind the supplies and vanishes into the night, long gone before any one realises the fireworks are on tonight.

Another look at the nanofibre technology in action.

And finally, we have the creed of the Plainwarden's. It is sombre to some, but an oath to those that know it's meaning.

Whilst other souls are warm and fed
We brave the bracing cold instead.
Whilst other souls can have a dream
The light’s our foe; we move unseen.

Whilst other souls can have a voice
Ours is forgotten, left by choice.
Whilst other souls are safe and sure
We keep the watch, our bodies raw.

Whilst other souls can think and learn
We keep fighting while nations burn.
Whilst other souls can make amends
Our Varg pair are our only friends.

Whilst other souls have lives like these
Our purpose puts us all at ease.
All our strength we willingly give
So that these other souls may live.
