The first of four character spotlights previewing each of the main characters in my new story, the Rose Saga! Each spotlight will be uploaded on Saturday each week as long as everything goes according to plan.
About this creation
While riding down a long and winding road, a young woman mounted on a horse stops at a smithy along the road. Two men sit outside the entrance to the smithy, as if standing lookout for the people inside.
She dismounts from the horse, and calls out to the two men, "Hey! I'd like to go inside!"
"Why do you need to go in? Looks to me like you already got a pretty big axe there, little lady." The older man brandishes his blade intimidatingly.
"No one calls me a 'little lady.' Are you going to let me in, or am I going to have to walk in the hard way?"
The two men prepare their blades, ready for combat. "Looks to me we have you outnumbered. This will be the last mistake you ever make," the older man says.
The woman jumps at the older man, slipping her axe past his defenses and sinking her axe deep into the man's neck, killing him. The other man charges at her, prepared to strike while her back is turned.
Quickly turning around, the woman jumps off the forge, pulling her axe out of the older man and attacking the other man, throwing him back into a defensive position.
She breaks his guard and lands a blow directly on the man's head, instantly killing him.
Pulling her axe out of the man's head, she walks away from the man and into the smithy.
Inside the smithy, two bandits stand in front of the smith, blades out. As the woman walks into the smithy, the smith says, "Please help me!"
Turning around, the male bandit says to the woman, "Well, well, well, what do we have here? A lady riding in, trying to play hero with her big axe!" He then looks at her axe in recognition. "Is that...."
The woman replies, "Yes. Now, will you leave this poor person alone, or will I have to get violent?"
"I'm afraid that isn't possible. Attack!" The woman jumps forward, attacking the male bandit. He deflects the attack while moving back, avoiding the brunt of the attack. The female bandit lunges forward, preparing to strike.
The woman turns around, striking the female bandit before she had a chance to strike and killing her with a blow to the head.
The woman pulls her axe out of the female bandit and lunges forward to attack the male bandit once again, making him move backwards even further.
The bandit deflects the strike, bounces off the wall, and strikes while leaping onto the counter, forcing the woman into a more defensive position.
She quickly moves to the side, jumping onto the counter, pushing the bandit off the counter and forcing him into a defensive position once again.
Her strike just inches from his face, the man drops the blade and runs out of the smithy, the woman right on his tail.
The man picks up the blade of the dead bandit and uses it to deflect a strike of the axe just in time, barely saving his own life.
The woman continues her relentless dance of death, the bandit barely deflecting the strikes while being forced slowly backwards.
Suddenly, the man launches an attack, surprising the woman and putting her into a defensive position.
The woman quickly counters with a deft strike, forcing the bandit backwards. The bandit says, "Enough of this. It is obvious we are at a standstill here."
"Good thing you have backup." A man appears out of thin air, holding a staff. "Now duck!"
The mage launches a fireball at the woman, making her fall to the ground to avoid it. The bandit dives forward towards the mage.
The mage then raises his staff, which begins to glow with blue light. The bandit grabs onto the staff, and the woman leaps forward, crying out, "No!"
The mage and the bandit disappeared just before the woman's strikes lands, making the strike hit the cobblestone road. The woman swears under her breath.
She gets back up and turns towards the smithy, where the smith awaits. The smith, clearly relieved says, "Who do I have to thank for my rescue?"
The woman replies, "My name's Carmine. Carmine Thorne."
"Thank you, Carmine. Is there anything you can do to repay you?"
Carmine walks back to her horse, putting her weapon back on the saddle. She says, "Just one thing. Is this the way to the capital?"
"Yes," the smith replies. Carmine nods, then mounts her horse, riding down the road towards the capital city.
