AAV-20 Variants
The AAV-20 Armored Assault Vehicle is a multipurpose wheeled fighting vehicle designed to transport and support infantry units on the battlefield.
About this creation

AAV-20A Armored Assault Vehicle

AAV-20A align="left">

The AAV-20 Armored Assault Vehicle is a multipurpose wheeled fighting vehicle designed to transport and support infantry units on the battlefield. It is particularly well suited to urban environments due to its speed, mobility and weaponry.

The AAV-20 has a crew of three: Driver, Gunner and Vehicle Commander. There is space in the crew compartment for the infantry commander and up to eight fully equipped infantrymen. An access ramp in the rear of the vehicle allows for the rapid deployment of the infantry squad.

Armor protection consists of two 4cm layers of alloy plating, separated by a laminate filler. This provides superb protection against most penetrator and shaped charge warheads. Ballistic plexisteel viewports afford excellent visibility for the crew. An anti-gauss shield dissipates the effects of directed energy weapons and electromagnetic pulse weapons.

The AAV-20A is the standard version of the AAV-20. This particular
vehicle has been painted with a three-color urban camoflage scheme.† It is equipped
with a GMC-15 Rotary Gyrojet Cannon on its right tertiary weapons station.

AAV-20B Armored
Assault Vehicle

AAV-20B with infantry support HSPACE="5" align="left" width="400" height="300" border="0"> face="Arial,Helvetica">Because of the limitations of the AAV-20A turret traverse to 290 degrees,
and the lack of antipersonnel weapons in the rear quarter, the main armament turret was
redesigned and upgraded.† The improved version is included in an upgrade package
designated AAV-20B

The AAV-20B turret has a coaxial 20mm projectile weapon,
fed by a 1000 round magazine. It can deflect enough to provide a field of fire from 10 to
2000m.† The fire control computer prevents slewing and firing into the vehicle
hull.† The turret is slightly larger to accommodate the coaxial gun and extra
ammunition stowage.

In the AAV-20B, the antenna fairing has ben removed and
the low and mid range frequency antennas relocated to the turret roof.† This allows
the turret to traverse a full 360 degrees.

Additional upgrades include an improved commanderís
console, improved main armament power cells, and upgraded vehicle armor.

AAV-20C Command and
Control Vehicle

AAV-20C width="400" height="300" border="0">The AAV-20C has been
designed to give† commanders the ability to move forward on the battlefield and to
evaluate the situation and provide real-time battle command.† The main armament has
been removed, replaced by a number of additional sensors including radars, communications
equipment, electronic support (ES) equipment and extended line-of-sight antennas.†
The side mounted weapons modules and countermeasures systems have been retained.† The
crew compartment has been fitted with an integrated command and control module including
computer systems and flat panel displays.† These systems give the commander the
ability to communicate with and direct ground, air and space forces.

The AAV-20C normally carries a crew of 5:† Driver,
gunner and command staff of 3.†† All systems can operate normally while the
vehicle is moving, but speed and maneuverability are limited.† When all
antennas and systems are stowed, the vehicle has the same, if not slightly better handling
characteristics of a "straight" AAV-20A.

AAV-20M Armored
Medical Vehicle

AAV-20M width="400" height="281" border="0">

The AAV-20M is designed to retrieve and evacuate wounded
soldiers.† The weapons stations have all been removed, replaced by large red cross
markings.† All other systems, including sensors and countermeasures have been
retained.† The crew compartment can carry 4 litter patients or 8 ambulatory
patients.† The vehicle carries a normal crew of three, all of whom have combat
medicine training.† Frequently, the vehicle will deploy with two paramedics and one
doctor.† It has a complete assortment of first aid supplies, stowed both inside the
vehicle and in compartments attached to the mud guards.

AAV-20R Armored
Recovery Vehicle

AAV-20RThe AAV-20R is a modified AAV-20 designed to maintain,
repair and† recover other vehicles in the field.† It is easily
distinguished by the large crane that replaces the main armament.†
Additionally, repair equipment, storage lockers, fuel tanks and other miscellaneous
items are stored on racks attached to each side of the vehicle.† The only
weaponry that is retained by the AAV-20R is the chin turret, IR/Smoke launchers
and hatch mounted crew weapon.

An AAV-20R is usually served by a
crew of 5, all of whom are mechanics specifically trained to repair and
maintain vehicles, weapons and equipment.††

Anti-Aircraft / Spacecraft Vehicle

AAV-20S width="400" height="325" border="0">

The AAV-20S performs
the mission of Aerospace Defense.† The main armament is replaced by a 3 rail surface
to air/space missile launcher.† The weapon system can engage air and space targets up
to a low planetary orbit.

The AAV-20S has a search radar located forward of the
commanderís hatch.† It rotates at 20 rpm and can detect aircraft or spacecraft
out to 500km.† When targets are engaged, 2 illumination radars mounted on the
tertiary side weapons stations provide missile midcourse guidance.† An active seeker
in the missile provides terminal guidance itself.

Targets are usually detected by the search radar, which
directs the illuminators to acquire and track the target.† The vehicle is also
equipped with an IR/Electro-optical acquisition and guidance system.† Regardless of
the engagement system being used, all 3 missiles can be guided to individual targets

Usually, 2-4 AAV-20S are assigned to a mechanized infantry
company.† Reloading of missiles is possible in the field, and is most often
accomplished with assistance from an AAV-20R.

AAV-20H Heavy Assault Vehicle

For attacking fixed positions or fortifications, the
AAV-20H is the vehicle of choice.† This vehicle has a completely redesigned
drive system which employs two all-terrain tracks as opposed to being a wheeled
vehicle.*† It is also equipped with the upgraded "B" turret, side
skirt armor, a battering ram, and additional armor slats over the
windscreens.† The chin turret is removed due to interference from the
battering ram.† The AAV-20H is excellent at punching through any type of
defensive positions.

Some AAV-20A's and AAV-20B's are fitted with upgrade
kits to make them suitable for the heavy assault role.† These
vehicles are usually designated "AAV-20A/H-mod" or
"AAV-20B/H-mod."† Of course, upgraded variants will retain
the wheeled drive train.

*A major design change such as tracks
would normally merit a different model number (i.e. AAV-21), however, in
order to bypass congressional resistance to new† military weapons
programs, the tracked version appears as either the AAV-20H or AAV-20TR
variant of the already existing AAV-20 program.

This thing is great! All the variants and stuff make it seem even more like a real military vehicle. I would like to see some other types of units, too.
