The legionary of the later Roman empire generally carried a large oval shield, a large helmet much like that of the later medieval knight.The famous pilum spear was largely abandoned for a long lance with which to hold off cavalry.
I love it! The shield resembles the actual symbols found on the shields of Roman soldiers in the late Roman Empire. But Roman Troops in the late years of the Roman empire wore chainmail and later just the helmet. Oh and don't forget to mention that the gladius was replaced with the spatha.
