Nova Velocity: Ep1
Introduction episode of my comic project.
About this creation
This is the introduction episode of a comic I started, inspired partly by Saber Scorpion's unfinished 'Takeover of Mordark' series. This episode is designed to introduce the characters and their situations and display some of the ship's that will be featured. It's a kind of comedy-drama with an involved story, but plenty of humor to go along. I don't have a very large lego collection so I kind of have to make do. I plan to make up for the somewhat lacking ships with good characters and story, and good photoshop effects, things I excel at.

This is kind of a feeler to see how people like it. If you read this please leave a review to tell me what you think. What you like, what you think should be improved, or weather it's worth continuing at all. In case anyone notices, I did borrow heavily from the game Escape Velocity. ;)

If I do continue I planned twelve 10 page episodes telling an intricate story with lots of humor and action. Of course it may take more or less than 12 episodes to finish it.

I reccomend you view the pages on brickshelf, then return here to look at my commentary for each page if you wish.

I whipped up the title page at the end when I realised I'd forgotten to do one. I simply borrowed bits from other panals, but it still works nicely imo.

Page 1, the first page I did, before I established a base format for arranging panels. Note that the fragmented pieces of the defence fleet are from my one and only Classic Space set, the 918 Space transport. It was unfortunately missing some pieces, which the previous owner had substituted. So interestingly enough the LL number bricks are LL-928 bricks from a Galaxy Explorer! This page introduces Admiral Neeta and his flagship, the F.S.S Dark Claw, as well as the planet Unin, which may be the setting for more action later.

Page 2, Introduces Jeff Baumer/Gold Leader, and his first mate Hobby. When I went to build a medium size ship I couldn't bring myself to dismantle my old Y-wing model. So instead I just built on top of it. I'm afraid it's a bit multicolored, but not too bad. For an excuse Jeff's Light Frigate is quite old and hacked together, he constantly modifies it to keep up with the times, but doesn't bother to paint it coherently. ;)

Page 3, This page introduces another important main character, as well as the opposing force to the Federation of Worlds, the Dani Republic. This Liader is a decendant of the Princess Liader from the Morfairian wars. She has a short temper and very little patience for anyone not as brilliant as her.

Page 4, Yes I did manipulate the pics of the D.R.S Rainbow Cloud. It's called the Rainbow Cloud because it's really badly multicolored. I used up all, and I do mean all, of my black bricks building the Federation ships, and I didn't have enough gray for this ship. Instead I lowered the pic to 10% saturation, thereby discoloring it to gray, but not completely. Despite it's colorfulness I really like design of the Dani Cruiser, it was influenced by Star Blazers and Daniel Jassim's Dragonstar. Gotta love that last frame with the Rainbow Cloud diving upside down towards Dani Prime.

Page 5, Ah, introducing Arrey and Dolph. These are the two absolute dipwad characters as we shall see in later episodes. Unlike Neeta and Liader they have no serious plot connections, they are purely for humor.

Page 6, I built the little control room in panal 1 after I did the page before, it looks much better than standing a minifig up in front of a baseplate, perhaps Federation traffic control is more modern... This page debut's an idea of mine. With a little modification one ship moc can play multiple roles. The ship in panal 6 is the F.S.S Xerxes, if you look you'll see it has fewer guns and different side engine nacelles than the Dark Claw. Another bit of trivia, in panel 2, you can't tell easily, but the Dark Claw is actually mostly open at the back. I didn't have quite enough black bricks to finish it. So I simply painted over the hole to hide the crew within.

Page 7, I really wanted to have the Dark Claw parked in a large hanger, but I obviously had nowhere near enough bricks to build a hanger of any size. Instead I used some clever snot pieces to build a hanger out of baseplates. You can see the Dark Claw entering this hanger in the last page. This page also introduces Captain Darius, a good friend and former teacher of Admiral Neeta.

Page 8, this simple scene of a conversation at a seaside bar was actually the most graphics intensive page I did, requiring a ton of photoshop manipulation for every frame. You can see I got a bit sloppy sometimes. :P Alphara is supposed to be a mostly water planet, and this scene is based on the waterfront at Pensacola, where I used to live. I remember standing by the water watching a destroyer sail into port.

Page 9, And the last few main characters are introduced, crewmen aboard the F.S.S Dark Claw. Much like Arrey and Dolph, the two computer operators and their commanding officer are mostly humor, with little connection to the plot. You'll note that although the Dark Claw is color coded on the outside, I had to use what few pieces I had leftover to do the interior, and they weren't black.

Page 10, I love the frame where the officer surprises the chatting computer operators. You'll note throughout the comic that I took the liberty of editing the faces, an idea I got from Dan Jassim's Captain Ahnee. Although it sometimes adds to the humor when a minifig has the same expression all the time, I wanted to add a bit more personality to my characters.

Again, please tell me what you think! Should I continue?

This is a very cool concept. The ships are quite detailed, and they have a good design to them. I look forward to seeing new episodes of this series.

Like I said on your other page... man, I thought I was long winded! You got mad skills with both the builds and the words. My advice if you plan to continue is don't give all the background info. Just go with the comic, it's more than enough and some people will get scared if they have to read. Looking forward to the next one. Later ~ Chris.
