...and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood...
About this creation

Taranis was the Celtic god of thunder, roughly equivalent with the Roman god Jupiter and the Norse god Thor.

When in doubt for a ship name, or in this case, a hovertank name, I flip through my copy of Myth, by Kenneth McLeish, an A-Z compendium of gods and heroes and whatnot from world mythology, until I find one that fits.

I tried to find out more online and all the hits that popped up were for this region in World of Warcraft, which I've never played and have no desire to... it took me a while to figure out I was typing in Tanaris rather than Taranis.

But even with proper spelling there wasn't much to find. Not a lot is known for certain about the Celts. My heritage is mostly Celtic... I feel so cool and mysterious.

I started out building a normal tank with treads... that changed into the treads being wrapped around one gear to make wheels, and I decided to make an APC... that led to an experiment with independent suspension that didn't work well with that type of wheel... so I decided to fix those wheels in place, except now it was six of them instead of four... so it turned back into a tanklike thing, and I made the turret... but it didn't look right with the wheels so I ditched them. Voila! the Taranis was born.

Believe it or not, that convoluted process is how almost all my ships and vehicles are born. I would love to build a SHIP but I've come to realize that I can't wing it. I've tried, I can't make it work. I need to make a plan and stick to it. Not my strong suit.

For some reason I just can't seem to maintain focus for a big project like that, I always want to wander off on a tangent. Black and red is such a good color combo... what were we talking about? I miss Calvin and Hobbes.

I still see Peanuts strips in newspapers and Charles Schulz has been dead for how long now? Give some living cartoonist that space, already. I like Snoopy too, but come on.

I'm not really scatterbrained -- I ramble nonsensically because it's more entertaining to me than making up a bunch of bogus stats. Weight: a gajillion tons. Armor: whatever Lego® pours into their molds. Armament: double-barreled something or other. Powerplant: a slightly used Mr. Fusion unit from a scrapped DeLorean. Top Speed: as fast as I can throw it. Crew: yeah, about that...

"All right, I'm ready! Let's roll!"
Oh, uh... I've been meaning to tell you... There's no room for you inside.

"April Fool's is past, man. So, where's the hatch?"
It's no joke. I couldn't fit a cockpit in this one.

"Sure, sure, whatever. Hm, you must enter through the back here somewhere..."
No, you don't enter anywhere. There is no interior. Period.

"You drag me all the way out here, only to tell me I can't drive this bad mother?"
Well, we can always pretend that you can...
"Pretend? In a few minutes you can pretend that I'm not kicking your ass!"

Look, I had every intention of making a cockpit. But as it turned out, either I leave your head exposed -- unacceptable -- or I make the body taller and you still have to almost lay flat inside -- equally unacceptable. Sorry, I'm a form over function guy.

"... can't believe this...(grumblegrumblegrumble)... of all the cheap, lazy ...(grumblegrumblegrumble)... son of a ...(grumblegrumblegrumble)... It's because I'm brown, isn't it?"
Oh god, here we go... How many times do I have to tell you, I'm only racist against peachers! I like you brown Lego guys. I wish there were more of you.
"Uh-huh... whatever. Stupid yellow supremacist..."

Ouch! That could have gone better. I think I'll leave you now; I should probably contact my lawyer. I have a feeling this guy's going to be trouble.

A nice clean design. I usually think that tanks without treads don't look right, but this one is perfect. Lee.

If I'm not mistaken, Taranis' symbol was the wheel. So is the circular design of this little guy symbolic? I wouldn't put it past you; ya clever dog, you! The articulating top portion's a nice touch, as is a little plastic toy having the capacity to hold a heated debate over racial issues with another plastic DO you do it!

This would make a worthy adversary to my own Prowler battle tank that was recently uploaded to the pages. I like it.
