A 999g LEGO Mindstorms robot build to compete in 1kg Sumo at the World Robot Olympiad in Bangkok, Thailand.
About this creation
Goliath is a 999g LEGO Mindstorms robot build to compete in Sumo at the World Robot Olympiad in Bangkok, Thailand. It has a ratcheting rear wheel setup to prevent losing ground, and also an edge detection system to avoid falling out of the ring.

Team Alpha's Goliath was up against Resonance Hybrid in the qualifiers. It was a very close match. After the light sensor tripped at the wrong time, Resonance Hybrid won the first bout, but Goliath managed to win the second through brute force (I love the click-click-click sound it makes when I'm gaining ground). I made a last minute adjustment to the edge-detection system, which caused it to trip itself prematurely, allowing Resonance Hybrid to beat Goliath.

However, after picking lots to compete again to enter the rounds, Goliath was up against a Thai school (the name of which, I cannot accurately translate into English). It was a fast, unstable robot that tended to commit suicide. Goliath easily finished it off (with that familiar click-click-click noise) by pushing her robot out of the ring. The second bout ended with her driving off the ring by herself.

Once passing the qualifiers, Goliath went up against Cute Cube. It wasn't really a cube, and it wasn't really all that cute. It has this scoop setup in the front designed to have the other robot drive up onto and lift their wheels off the ground. Goliath fell into the trap and ended up being pushed backwards. However, thanks to the ratcheting rear wheels, it did not lose any more ground in the 3 minutes of the match. It ended with Cute Cube winning due to judge's decision.

The second bout, Goliath decided to take Cute Cube from the back, but the random direction generation coding, Murphy's law ended up making Goliath take on Cute Cube from the front, so the same thing happened again. In a very close stand-off, it looked like Cute Cube was going to slowly shift itself until it fell out. But Goliath's edge-detection system tripped (because it was lifted off the ground), and the edge detection code tripped, causing it to back up. This allowed Cute Cube to win the second bout. Oh well...

It was fun while it lasted, though.

Note the ratcheting gear system that only allows forwards movement.
