Monorail interstellar tower with 8 levels, a 1.6x1.6 meters square base and is 2.5 meters high
About this creation
In order to give more volume to my layout, I decided to build a monorail Babel tower like structure as light as possible. The final project has 8 monorail levels consisting of two helical ways (one for up and the other for down) connected at the bottom and at the top in order to have one final way. Two trains can run on the track, one going up and the other going down, without collision.
The structure is stabilized by the monorail tracks themselve.
Star Wars official sets have been used for decoration inside the structure with the Death Star at the top making the total construction 2.5 meters high.
A wireless small camera has been put on one train so that the visitors of the Fanabriques 2008 exhibition could see what the minifig in the train could see - and sometimes see themselves - on the PC screen.
It has been split into large pieces (20 to 40 cm long) for the transport and mounted again in 2 hours. You can see me (supported by 3 kids) during the start of the mounting.
More pictures and 3 live videos can be found on the Brickshelf .
I love monorails and this is definitely monorails to the extreme! One nice technique I take away from it is using a technic link on a jumper to hold the track down to the supports. I may use this in the future myself! Should prevent the track getting knocked off the supports as frequently as they tend to.
That┤s a crazy structure, great job! Is the whole thing really stable and not shaky at all? It looks like it was tons of work... Did you have to completely build it in the exhibit┤s location? Or was it possible to make it at home and then to just bring different sub-sections of the whole structure into the exhibition hall, and then fixing everything again there? Anyways, impressive work!
