Medium Orange livery makes this a beautifully subtle engine!
About this creation
Here is an attempt at a 2-6-0 Mogul in the D&RGW livery called the Bumble
Bee. I spotted this one in this great color scheme in a recent Model Railroader magazine
(which I subscribe to). I love building in more exotic color schemes. It's hard
to tell but the orange is medium orange, not the standard (aka BNSF) orange.
With the limited palette of medium orange I had to make the boiler embellishments
in black and gray. Also it was a bit limiting when detailing the cab and
tender for the same reason. But of course I prefer simple over gaudy!
This is also my first full blown attempt to use Big
Ben Bricks steam driver wheels. They run very well and in this particular
configuration there are no bogies on this engine! Notice that the center driver
is the only flanged driver (the other two are "blind" drivers). The
second flange is on the smaller front spoked wheels also BBB wheels.
Here are a few pictures of the MOC and some of the various model railroad
company's models that I used as a prototype.
large version (~500k)
PS I have to say that this has been a real fun one to build! I am really
happy with the results esp the color scheme and it runs very well too (including
through points and across cross tracks)!
This is a fantastic engine. I've been gawking at it for several months now, but I've only now taken the time to give it the review it deserves. The use of just the one pair of flanged drivers is just brilliant, and I almost went with your solution when building my own train. To tell the truth I've more than once been tempted to copy your design altogether (though perhaps using different colors to save money). Great job!
Neatness..... The loco is good, and the BBB wheels really work. But I don't see the 1 x 2 handles present on the proto... what happened? Not a fan of the tender though... it has 8 wheels and not 4 but then there's only so much you can do with a rare colour. It's nice to see you building again, so keep up the good work!
