The Devil Went Down to Georgia
And now for something completely different.
About this creation
The devil went down to Georgia
He was lookin' for a soul to steal
He was in a bind
'Cause he was way behind
And he was willin' to make a deal
When he came upon this young man
Sawin' on a fiddle and playin' it hot
And the devil jumped
Up on a hickory stump
And said, “Boy, let me tell you what.

I guess you didn't know it
but I'm a fiddle player too.
And if you care
to take a dare,
I'll make a bet with you.
Now you play a pretty good fiddle, boy
But give the devil his due.
I'll bet a fiddle of gold
Against your soul
'Cause I think I'm better than you.”
The boy said “My name's Johnny
And it might be a sin,
But I'll take your bet
And you're gonna regret
'Cause I'm the best there's ever been.”
The devil opened up his case
And he said “I'll start this show”
And fire flew from his fingertips
As he rosined up his bow
Then he pulled the bow across the strings
And it made a evil hiss
And a band of demons joined in
And it sounded something like this

When the devil finished
Johnny said, “Well you're pretty good old son
Just sit right in that chair right there
And let me show you how it's done.”

The devil bowed his head
Because he knew that he'd been beat
And he laid that golden fiddle
On the ground at Johnny's feet
Johnny said, “Devil just come on back
If you ever wanna try again
I done told you once, you son of a bitch,
I'm the best there's ever been.”

NOTE: Impulse build. The everyday practice of a businessman giving a street musician change, with a Charlie Daniels Band twist. What more is there to say?

*Credit for the double bass design goes to Mister oo7.

**The song can be found HERE if you're aching for some fine fiddle work.

People have already praised everything else, so I'll just say that is one great bench you made. (Not to mention the rest of it) Great work!

Awesome work, Alex! Not only is the atmospheric and mood setting lighting done phenomenally well as usual along with your metaphoric take of various verse into a more modern realm, but it's also great seeing that bass design in the brown that I don't own. I'd like to thank you for producing something with it as cool this.

Awesome work here Alex. A great twist on a great song. I like casting the corporate goon as the devil. Do I detect a little subtle social commentary there? Or am I just way too cynical about the business world in general? The world may never know...

Nah, no commentary. It's just, after Al Pacino in "The Devil's Advocate" and Ray Wise in "Reaper", it made sense for the devil to be in a suit.

You're welcome, Chrispy. And as for you Alex... way to take the best fiddle song ever made and translate it beautifully into this wonderful build. Your MOCs have always been pure art. Keep It SNOTty Sir!

Now I'll have that in my head for days to come...thanks a lot. I love the idea, and the song is classic fiddle work, to say the least. Great work! C ya~Nick

Brillant as usual Alex. Your presentation is what sets the bar for the rest of us. I only have five words for ya in regards to a follow up "Hope you guess my name." I'd love to see you translate that one. I was thinking of doing that a few months ago but we all know how ADHD I am when it comes to this kind of thing and... Hey look, a Twinkie! ~ Chris.

This is a really creative spin on the both the song and the busker. (And I love this song!) Fantastic photography and great models. I'd love to see more in this vein.

Not exactly how I pictured the devil, but it doesn't really detract from the quality of the MOC, fantastic job.

Video coming: March '09! Now correct me if I'm wrong, because they were a bit blurry there in the background, but the band of demons looked to me a lot like ZZ Top...the perfect back-up demons for every occassion!

Not to mention the fact that they clearly aren't playing fiddles, and the demons are just your average friendly hobos.

Great song (too bad we can't embed playlists in our pages anymore for whatever reason), great builds (of course), but my mind rebels at the setting. You don't find many hickory stumps in subway stations. I guess it smacks of too many books I loved that got absolutely butchered when made into movies. "That's not how it's supposed to go!" I always scream.
