B-wing Armored Assault Gunship (finished)
LAAT? No, I have a BAAG!!
About this creation
The B-wing Armored Assault Gunship (BAAG) was developed during the clone wars and commissioned by the Republic. The design company is unknown but some say it was the predecessor of the Corellian Engineering Corporation. The BAAG was developed to fulfill air strike missions that the LAAT simple could not undertake. The problem with the LAAT was that it was a transport first and gunship second. This became apparent after several LAATs were destroyed during air strike missions. The BAAG was designed specifically as a gunship in every manner so that it could effectively complete such missions.

The armament of the BAAG speaks boldly of its gunship design. It has two rocket launchers mounted above the cockpit that fired rockets similar to that of the LAAT except they were guided, homing rockets. The rocket launchers are also self reloading, like the LAAT, and carry a standard load of ten rockets per launcher. The rockets were often used to destroy ground vehicles, but could also be fired for air to air combat. The BAAG also has four light ion cannons mounted just outside the cockpit with two on each side. The ion cannons were used to disable enemy vehicles to make them easier to destroy. They were also used to disable shield generators in order to preserve rockets for more vital targets. Mounted just outside the ion cannons are the two twin linked lasers (one on each side). These are similar to the lasers on the front of the LAAT, but since they are twin linked they have a higher rate of fire. Mounted furthest outside are the two large and powerful sonic cannons. These were very similar to the Geonosian sonic cannon only slightly smaller. They could be used to knock down infantry or to topple walkers making both easier targets to eliminate. All of these weapons are stationary and forward facing.

The BAAG also has four rotating and tilting turreted weapons with two mounted on the underside and two on the topside. On the underside were the two Gatling blasters used to decimate enemy infantry and when used in combination with the sonic cannons did so very effectively. The idea is to fire a few shots from the sonic cannons to knock the infantry down then rip them to shreds with the Gatlings. Opposite the Gatlings on the topside of the ship are the two quad blaster turrets. These were used to destroy any aerial threat to the BAAG. These turrets were the predecessor to the ones featured on such ships as the Millennium Falcon and are basically a smaller, less powerful version of them. This adds to the myth that the company responsible for designing the BAAG eventually became or merged with the Corellian Engineering Corporation.

So you may be asking yourself how can one pilot control all these weapons and fly the ship at the same time? Well, actually he doesn’t. A highly intelligent Integrated Droid Brain (IDB) aids the pilot in control of the BAAG. The IDB mainly controls the turreted weapons but can be given control of the other weapons and even flight if the pilot elects to. Originally the BAAG was designed without the IDB but after several crashes during test runs the IDB was installed to aid the pilot. Before the IDB the pilot had too much to think about while operating the ship and basically forgot to steer while operating the weapons. The IDB took away some of responsibilities of the pilot and allowed him to concentrate more on flight and steering.

Along with the IDB a third feature of the BAAG is the detachable cockpit that acts as a landspeeder. The B-wing Cockpit Landspeeder (BCL) was useful in many ways. If a mission was too dangerous for the pilot he would detach and the IDB would take over and complete the mission. Also if a single BAAG was sent on a mission the pilot could detach and attack from the ground while the IDB attacks from the air. The twin linked light blaster and two blaster cannons mounted on the BCL makes it a formidable threat.

Despite the time, effort and money put into the BAAG, its career was short lived since shortly after it was put into mass production the Clone Wars abruptly ended. After the Clone Wars many BAAGs fell into the hands of mercenaries, criminals and pirates, since the empire abandoned its use of the ship. It attracted outlaws due to its formidable armament and versatility.

I decided to make this moc because I never really liked the shape of the original b-wing and never really thought it looked like a b. I made this ship with the idea that it should be the shape of a capital B. I like the way it turned out even though it very loosely represents a B. Thanks for the comments and ratings check out my other mocs too!!
