The Bananamobile . The Bananamobile is being entered in category 21 (real vehicles) of the MOCathlon for the Golden Relievers. . Let me take you back in time . . . back to when Detroit was king . . . when Uncle Walter brought us the evening news and that was the way it was . . . when Batman, the Monkees, and other TV shows with cool cars and not much else going for them were on the air. There was a show, a silly Saturday-morning live action thing called "The Banana Splits -- go on, follow the link if you dare. It had a catchy (i.e. annoying) theme song and pun-laden jokes by Snorky, Bingo, Fleegle and Drooper. I was five, and I thought that show was the greatest. I still remember dancing around with my brothers and sisters when the theme song crackled throught the speakers of the old black and white TV we had back then. One thing about those free-wheeling days of my youth was custom cars. They were everywhere. I'm no gearhead, but I do love a souped-up car with a unique design. Well, it turns out the designers had a plan to introduce a new vehicle on "The Banana Spits" just before the show was yanked off the air. I have often heard rumors of this mystery car, so I decided to do a little investigating and discovered the only remaining photos of this concept sports car. I present to you . . . The Bananamobile! The car is shown with test driver Steve Muldoon behind the wheel just before going out for it's one and only test run. The police report states that he was dancing to the "The Banana Splits" theme song when he rammed into the bridge at 158 miles per hour . . . Builder's notes: When I broke down the steam roller I got for Christmas, I realized the two yellow fenders would look good another vehicle but wasn't sure what. On Sunday, I decided to play around with them and see what happened. Now you know. I messed around with the shape, trying to give it that 60s car-of-the-future sort of feel if I could. I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out.
