The Olympians . For Mark Murphy's contest. .
Zeus, lord of Olympus. The rain god, cloud gatherer and ruler of the sky. He Carried thunderbolts to zap those who fell from his favor. His sacred bird was an eagle.
Poseidon, second greatest of the gods and brother to Zeus. He was the king of the seven seas, and bestowed horses to mankind. He carried a trident, with which he would shake and shatter whatever he pleased.
Hades, lord of the underworld, was god of the riches and precious metals of the earth. He wore a helmet that made the wearer invisible.
Hera, queen of Olympus, and wife of Zeus. She was the protector of marriage and married women.
Hermes, messenger of the gods. He was the divine herald who brought souls down to Hades.
Athena, goddess of a LOT of stuff. Including agriculture, wisdom and civilization, she was Zeus’s favorite child and was the only one who could carry his lightning bolts. The owl was her favorite bird.
Dionysius, god of wine and revelry. He was the only god in Olympus whose parents weren’t both divine.
Aphrodite was the goddess of beauty and love. Where ever she went on earth flowers sprung from the ground.
Hephaestus, Aphrodite’s husband, was lord of the forge and fire. Among the perfectly beautiful gods and goddesses he was the only one that was ugly, he was also lame.
Artemis goddess of the hunt, and wild animals. Often depicted holding a bow and with hunting hounds in her wake.
Apollo, twin brother of Artemis, and god of music, light, truth and healing. Usually seen holding a bow or harp, I chose the harp (does it look like one?) since his sister has the bow.
Ares, god of war and not much else.
Some of this is directly quoted from “Mythology” by Edith Hamilton and “D’aulares’ book of Greek myths”. That’s what I used as my sources, as well as little bit of my own prized imagination. ; )
