8880 Studless . The second of my tributes to classic Lego sets, rebuilt in studless form... . As far as I am concerned, 8880 marked the high-water mark for studded Lego Technic. It pushed the upper limits of what was technically possible with the 'old' sylte Lego, and as such was my favourite set from that time. I have attempted to re-create the original as closely as possible entirely in studless building. It is of course still 4x4x4: 4-wheel drive, 4-wheel steering: I have replicated the original 4-speed gearbox, keeping the gear ratios the same. This was always one of the most awesome features of 8880. That modern sets are still using the same components for gearboxes and PTO is testiment to how forward-thinking the desing was. The boot opens... ... and the lights pop up using a lever on the dashboard. I have had to re-design the suspension slightly, using the new CV-joint hubs, but apart from that the proportions and technical features are unchanged. The underside view, this is as near as I could get it to the original. In the studless world constructions can suffer from a lack of structural rigidity. The chasis took most of the work to get right:
