Basilikoi Infantry . Led by the Porphyrogenitus himself, the infantry forces of the Basilikoi stand ready to defend the empire from the many barbarians at its borders who would see it burn. . The Basilikoi are a vast empire spanning hundreds of inhabited stars and many times that many uninhabitable systems that provide endless resources to fuel the empire's military machine. Unfortunately, those resources are needed, for barbarians always seek to take what they can from the wealthy and civilized empire. At the forefront of the constant struggle to protect the citizens of the Basilikoi stand the brave men of the imperial military.
The son and heir of the emperor is the Porphyrogenitus, meaning "born in the purple." He wields a golden Fire Storm pistol, which is an experimental weapon that uses highly excited exotic particles to tear apart targets at a subatomic level. He also uses an Orange Transparent Chainsaw Spatha, and his armor is a more ornate version of the Hetairoi armored vacuum suit.
Here the Porphyrogenitus stands near a partial squad of Hetairoi (the Companions, the elite guard of the emperor), with an Assault Squad arrayed in front of him.
These are officers of the Basilikoi army. On the right is a Dekarch, commander of a squad of ten. In the middle is a Lieutenant, commanding a platoon of three squads. On the left is a Captain, commanding a company of three platoons with his own attached command squad. Officers are given advanced versions of the standard reactive cloth vacuum suit, and wield both kinetic penetrator pistols and battle steel sabres.
The Stratiotes are the backbone of the Basilikoi military. They serve as both ground troops and marines, and are armed with kinetic penetrator rifles, sometimes called sliver guns for the small depleted uranium darts that they fire at very high velocity, accelerating them with a mix of artificial and anti-gravity fields inside the barrel of the weapon. Every soldier has a reactive cloth vacuum suit designed to defeat most small arms while retaining flexibility and light weight.
The Heavy Kinetic Penetrator is the man-portable anti-armor weapon of choice for the Basilikoi, typically deployed on a one-per-squad basis. They fire a more massive projectile at higher velocity than the basic rifle, though their greater size makes them unwieldy against the smallest targets.
Fire Storm is the name of a secret weapon project undertaken by Basilikoi scientists. It uses highly excited exotic particles to shred targets on a subatomic level. The technique for generating and controlling those particles is perhaps the single most well-protected secret in the empire, as the weapon system has been instrumental in the survival of civilization in the face of constant barbarian threats. These man-portable cannons are employed for area-of-effect squad support, though only the central military units controlled directly by the emperor and his son have access to the weapon on a per-squad level.
The Scout-Sniper is a vital support unit, offering recon and long-range, accurate fire support to the regular troops. Wearing adaptive camo cloaks over their reactive cloth vacuum suits, the Scout-Snipers can infiltrate behind enemy lines and remove sentries, officers, heavy weapons crews, and other high-value targets with precision. Their sniper rifles fire slightly heavier KPs than standard rifles at a higher velocity, and they also feature advanced targeting sensors.
Assault squads feature reinforced helmets and ceramic breast- and back-plates. The commander feature here has the gold-tinted visor indicative of rank, and wields both a heavy kinetic penetrator pistol and a Chainsaw Spatha. Typical Assault Squads feature three more troopers armed in the same fashion.
Shredders are similar to shotguns, though they too use gravitic fields to accelerate depleted uranium kinetic penetrators to very high velocities. The difference between shredders and rifles is that the latter fire single projectiles while the former fire a spread of smaller KPs that have superior performance at short range but lack medium- and long-range stopping power and accuracy. They are a favored weapon of Assault squads, typically deployed three at a time.
Shields are constructed from a composite of ceramic armor and battle steel, allowing the Assault troopers who carry them to advance with relative impunity into the face of heavy fire. Combined with their heavy pistols, this makes them devastating in urban combat and ship boarding actions.
Commandos are elite troops experts in infiltration, sabotage, multiple weapon specializations and cross-training, demolitions, as well as "black" operations.
The standard weapon for commandos and the elite Hetairoi is the kinetic penetrator carbine, a slightly smaller version of the standard rifle. It is more maneuverable without sacrificing accuracy or damage, though the higher acceleration necessitated by the shorter barrel length leads to increased recoil, so generally only the best marksmen can use the carbines without a drop in performance.
The Auxilia Infantry Robot is a capable design able to use most infantry weapons, though it requires that they be modified to remove the stocks. Heavily armored and programmed with the best combat subroutines, the Auxilia is a welcome sight to pinned-down Basilikoi troops.
The Tek-Arkanos is a member of a cybernetic cult existing within the empire. Utterly devoted to the person of the emperor, they employ technologies so far in advance of everyone else that they are akin to magic. Capable of manipulating their environment seemingly at will, they make deadly opponents when they choose to take the field.
When diplomacy, bribery, economic pressure, and military might all fail, the Basilikoi dispatch assassins, highly-skilled, unacknowledged specialists equipped with the latest in ceramic-plated reactive cloth vacuum suits, helmets featuring the best sensors available, and specialist weapons capable of firing very small KPs at extreme velocities with a very high rate of fire. Veritable killing machines, those few living enemies of the empire who are aware of the existence of the assassins speak of them in hushed tones, constantly looking over their shoulders, waiting for the inevitable to happen.
