Umbravore, Arboreal Stalker - Somniferrian Terrestrial . Hello again, all. Here's my third addition to the lifeforms of Somniferria; a stealthy and vicious packhunter called an 'Umbravore'. As always, THANK YOU for looking, and PLEASE feel free to leave Crits/Comm's. Cheers, and Enjoy! .
Umbravores. Bad news for most of the more peaceful creatures of 'Somniferria' (VERY loosely translates to "Metal Dream")
Alright! So: Umbravores.
The Frosthulkes have the Polar Plainscapes, and the Emberhawkes rule the crags and skies of terrestrial Somniferria, right? Well then, the continent-spanning Forests should have an alpha-Predator, too. Enter the Umbra's.
While all Somniferrian flora have adapted crystalline dermal plating of some fashion (for the collection and storage of radiative energy from Somniferria's binary star system) the balance of this physiology is most precarious in these leonine packhunters.
Unable to stay exposed to Solar rays long enough to effectively collect energy, due to the almost perpetual canopy from the skyscraping trees, the Umbravores had to adapt to the most readily-available alternative energy source to their predatory existence; The trine Moons of their planet (Phobos, Unis, & Lurien).
Having evolved primarily as Nocturnal creatures, the weaker, reflected, lunar radiation must be far more efficiently used as an energy source - and still, it's not nearly enough to provide complete nutrition and radio-plasmal energy reserves. So the Umbravores supplement their collection of common cosmic radiation in an altogether appropriate fashion, albeit... rather messy.
The Umbra's supplement their diet with the only other readily-available source of energy found in the perpetual gloom of their arboreal nightscape:
...From all the other creatures that store SOLAR radiation so well. Not a bad solution (at least for the 'Vores =P ). SUPERB at plasma conversion, these predators have found a radiochemical means to convert ambient plasmal energy into raw electronueral pulse energy - which is then stored away in their own special reservoir organs for later use. It's the Somniferrian way of Life.
What should have been a limiting factor: their dependency on this Vampiric lifestyle, namely; the 'Vore's have thrived in their shadowy realm. Much less flashy than their terrestrial neighbors, these animals have made the most from the least. Their primary use of Cosmic Radiance is fuel for their unique Camouflage.
(here's the main dorsal energy plate for lunar radiation collection)
Sometimes the predatory threat display is all that's necessary to deter more armored scavenger competition from a fresh Kill.
Ordinarily recognized for their lambent red corneal glow, the stealth phasing trigger as they assume their natural camouflage often flares green, indicating the bending of light past the violet portion of the visible spectrum by their dermal luminance field.
...Or something. =)
Hey, I don't take myself too seriously - you shouldn't either. This is all in good fun.
Even with a shorter, thicker tail, this is a long, lean animal MOC. Something like 22" from fang to tailtip, 8" tall at the shoulder on all fours, and 11" when fully erect resting on its front paws.
...as shown, here.
Like the Emberhawke build, I used a doublejointed upper thigh, and a fixed right-angle technic bit for the lower leg, to make a more fully-folded crouching position (for that sitting-on-their-haunches, Pantherlike look).
While they pack a couple of nasty surprises elsewhere, those forepaws are the main line of offense. They are overlarge, with wicked carbon biosteel talons for slashing or digging. To add insult to injury, they posses an envenomed spur or dewclaw, shown here in red. Their venom is a paralytic compound, to transfix their victims while they ...um... 'work'. Gruesome, I know. But sometimes Nature isn't pretty.
I really, really dug those long limbs and the poses they made possible. In my mind, the 'Vores have traded Stealth for protection - their armor is far more lightweight carbon-graphite biomesh, allowing for frightening natural agility and speed. Pair that with nigh-invisibilty and acrobatic grace, and you have a recipe for a born Alpha Predator.
Not PRECISELY the order I'd intended to reveal these, but you'd have eventually seen them, regardless - yep: if four razor-taloned limbs just aren't enough, add more! The 'Vores use this pair of dorsal blades to grapple and puncture even the thickest armors of their chosen Prey.
Here's a look at that tailspear. It has enough lateral surface to act as something of a collection panel - when 'Vores climb all the way to the forest Canopy, they are sometimes seen turning these to the Moons to gather vital radiance. If you spot the gleam as they do, count yourself lucky, and head the opposite direction - fast. If they don't want you to see them, well... ordinarily...
...it's already too late. One blurred green flash, and they are gone - perfectly invisible, so long as they remain out of direct rays of solar or lunar radiance. Nassssty.
The Umbravores will hunt (and eat) literally anything too slow to outrun, outclimb, or out-soar them in the arboreal night. One-on-one, most potential prey would stand a fair chance, but... did I mention they hunt in Packs?
With an unpleasant vampiric penchant, 'Umbravores are also known to have a taste for neural tissue (Ick.) Even an outnumbered FrostHulke may end up as Dinner (shown). It's rumored they are actually able to assimilate electrochemical information this way, but, as no Somniferrian race has yet proven to possess Sentience (and because no one wants to get too close), we may never know.
A closer look at that primary claw array.
Main fang structure indicates piercing etymology, but they have smaller secondary chelicerae for tissue consumption as well. (They just prefer a 'liquid diet').
Like FrostHulke, this MOC has positionable trapezius armor segments; allows arms to go very high, but can spread back out when arms are lowered for a fuller, stronger-looking neckline around the clavicle.
I am admittedly pleased with the hand articulation. They allowed for a great many goofy/cool poses. Like this one. Heywhawazzatoverthere? Yeah, YOU. I'mtalkinaYOU, Bub.
I really enjoyed those 'thorn'-like spikes from Witch Doc 3.0, made nice angles out from the elbow armor.
As many of their terrestrial contemporaries have, the 'Vores have put stored radiation energy to some amazing uses...
An unstealthed Umbravore slinking down a trunk from the Canopy.
'Alas, poor Yoric. I knew him w'-oh, ...nevermind.
Like the Hulkes and Hawkes, one of the most common energy conversions Somniferrian lifeforms use is the charging of natural cutting and piercing anatomy.
A reverse shot, without the linear charging underway.
I liked the mix of black, silver, and graphite-like colors. Tried to stick with those.
Meant to be the first reveal for those dorsal blades. Like the FrostHulke MOC, they are poseable through virtually limitless variations, depending on intended function. Here they are used for a traditional flared Threat Display commmon among 'cats of many planets.
Another good look at the primary claws, and a 'back-off-bub' stance.
Was trying to show off that the build can bring as many as five limbs to bear upon a target, when needed. The dorsal blades can strike well in advance of the skull, piercing and slashing while grappling an opponent with the primary talons - even slashing at the flanks and underbelly simultaneously. Ouch.
Another look at the same, without Titlesplash.
Back legs splayed, dorsal blades wide.
A MOCer commented recently on how shiny some of my bits look - I'm not really sure why they look so glossy. Of all the effects I add in with 'Shop, that isn't one =). Mebbe I have oily Scotch-American skin. Dunno.
Nice profile shot.
Blade-happy critters, those 'Vores. Meh: everyone needs a Hobby, I guess.
Good full crouch, effaced.
...and right-Profile presented. Very lionesque.
Charging up for some wetwork...
Clutching a recent trophy. Hey, a cat's gotta eat, right?
Striding elongated profile...
... and again, with tail assembly aloft. HF parts hold those poses very well. Love those joints. As an aside comment: I hear alot of MOCpagers dismiss most HF works. While I agree with most of the pre-builds, out-of-box, some of the BITS have GREAT potential. I am wholeheartedly embracing their integration with my favorite Bionicle constructs.
Crouched detail pose, dorsal blades in retracted position.
The build can get up and threaten with both forepaws, provided I use the tail for ballast. Useful in a fight (foreshadowing for later photos ;)
Happy Halloween, all!
"WE'RE NUMBER O-um... wait... um, whichnumberareweagain?
So; I had good intentions, wanting to bring all the Somniferrian lifeforms identified so far into one photoshoot. Again, I had all the best intentions. One can expect the Cat, Dog, and Canary, to behave only so well, when all locked in the same cage...
It saddens me to report that, with embarrassing speed (and pathetic predictability), INSTINCT took over.
Things went, well... Bad.
And to be perfectly honest...
...things might have gotten...
...just a little bit Out-Of-Hand.
Eventually, I had to Step In.
At least Emberhawke had the good grace to be Ashamed of their Conduct. Even after Grounding all three, it took awhile for them to stop Pouting. AWK-ward...
In the end, we WERE able to get them to cooperate long enough for one good, Charlie's Angels'-type shot. =)
Well, as always, thanks for the Feedback, and Thanks for looking. PLEASE comment/crit if you feel the need: LIKE if you do, Don't if you don't; and thank you again for Visiting! Cheers!!!
