Blast’s boot splashed in a shallow, muddy puddle as Padfoot, Jelli, Hess, Falcon, Nightblaze, Slash and he ran across the dry landscape towards where they had seen the republic base. It was four hours after they had crash-landed and they were on their scouting mission. The terrain was dry like in a small town on the edge of a desert and there were the same sort of houses scattered around. Bashed and wind-swept with the wall paint cracked and flaking off. The wind whistled across the plains and blew up dust clouds in various places. Dead or dying trees stood on their own at random points and as the leaders ran towards the base, an evil-looking bird swooped in and landed on a rickety branch, watching them. As they got closer to the base, Blast commented “Hm… No guards.” “HALT! STAY RIGHT WHERE YOU ARE!” A clone trooper ran up to them with his gun aimed at them all. “REMOVE YOUR HELMETS! ALL OF YOU!” he shouted once they’d stopped. “Speak of the devils.” Blast mumbled then said more audibly “Do as the man says.” The U.R.S. leaders all removed their helmets. “Very well.” The soldier seemed to be calming down. “State your name, rank and legion.” “I am Elite Commander R.K. Blast of the 609th and the U.R.S.. These are my fellow U.R.S. leaders.” And the mention of him being an Elite Commander the soldier straightened and saluted. “Sir!” “At ease trooper.” Blast told him and put his helmet back on. The other leaders did likewise. “Who’s in Command of this post?” “High Commander Charge, Sir.” The trooper replied. “Very well. Take us to him.” “Yessir!” The soldier led the way towards the base. As they walked Blast noticed that there was a lot of activity around the base, moving barriers and stacking crates. “So what’s all this activity for?” he asked their soldier guide. “I think I’d better let the Commanders explain that.” He replied as they walked through an open door into the base. He pushed open a side door and stood to the side holding it open for them all as they walked into the room. It was a large, square room, with doors leading off on all sides. In the middle of the room there was a raised platform about half a meter higher than the rest of the floor. The room was full of people running around, talking, comparing notes, checking papers and right in the middle, standing on the platform was the High Commander. He was pointing and shouting at various people below him. The group stood in the doorway watching everything that happened. “Who’s that standing next to the High Commander?” Jelli asked. “Oh that’s Commander Flare.” Their guide replied. “He’s second in command. But.” He started to whisper. “People prefer him to Charge. He’s kinder. He looks after people. Charge just bosses everyone around. He’s alright to outsiders though so you lot should be fine.” “O.K. Thanks.” Blast thanked their guide and moved into the room towards the platform. “No. I want 5 at each entrance. Got it this time?” The High Commander was shouting at someone as Blast got closer. Suddenly he noticed the newcomers. “And who exactly are you?” He asked Blast. “Greetings High Commander. I am Elite Commander R.K. Blast of the 609th and the U.R.S..” Blast replied calmly with particular emphasis on the word Elite. Charge slowly straightened up slightly and Flare, who had been leaning casually on a desk with his arms crossed also slowly stood up and unfolded his arms. “And who might the U.R.S. be?” Charge asked. “The United Rebelling Systems.” Flare answered and his superior turned to look at him. “You and that other guy, Iadsgb, are at war aren’t you?” Blast smiled under his helmet. “So you’ve heard of us?” “Yes. I am a great admirer of yours. You work very well.” Praised Flare. “Thank you Commander.” Blast nodded to him. “But yes he is right. I am at war with Iadsgb.” Blast spoke to Charge again. “And you need my help?” Charge concluded. Blast paused for a moment to plan what he said carefully. “Yes. But not for the reasons you may think. My ship was shot down above this planet by a C.I.S. landing cruiser.” “Landing cruiser?” Charge asked him. Blast nodded politely. “Yes; A landing cruiser. And if we are going to leave then we will need your help. We just need a few engineers to help fix the engines. As soon as they are repaired we can be on our way.” Charge thought about this. “But we are running very low on troops. If that landing craft is targeting us, we will not make it.” Little did they know, at the very moment, a large squad of battle droids was running across the plains from the landing craft, towards the republic base. “HALT!” The same clone that had stopped Blast and the other leaders leapt out at them. “Argh!” he screamed as one of the droids shot him and they carried on running. “Please. We need your help. If we don’t leave before the end of the day, you are all in terrible danger.” Blast pleaded with him. “We’re always in terrible danger.” Charge mumbled. “Perhaps we should help.” Flare said. “I mean, we don’t even know if those droids were coming here. They might have just been passing. Nothing has happened yet, so maybe nothing will.” But what he didn’t realize was that he had spoken too soon… “Argh!” another clone was shot down just outside the base. “DROIDS!” another shouted but then he too was shot down. Luckily another clone saw what happened and sprinted inside. The door to the main hall burst open and everyone spun to see what was happening. The clone from outside stood panting in the doorway then shouted, “The Clankers are here!” Blast didn’t think it would have been possible but suddenly the room became even busier as people started rushing even more. Charge turned to Flare, “So much for they might not even be coming here!” “We’ll help.” R.K. told him as he jumped down from the platform. “We’ll all stay and help you fight.” “Your assistance is greatly appreciated but I’m afraid we still may not stand a chance, even with you and your team’s help.” Charge pulled out a sniper rifle and started ordering people around. Blast went back to the other leaders and explained what they were going to do to them. BUT WHAT WILL HAPPEN NEXT? FIND OUT IN PART 3! COMING IN A FORTNIGHT'S TIME! FRIDAY 6th JANUARY!
