2011 in LEGO . 2011, a year of reveloutains, celebrations and disasters. I have selected twelve interesting stories from the year. Some you may have heard of and some of my favorites. . January 14th: After a month of violent protests the Tunisian government finally falls. This event is in my opinion, the begining of defining point of the year- the Arab Spring. February 11th: Since January 25th many Egyptians having been inspired by the Tunisian protesters have been demonstrarting against the Egyption president Hosni Mubarak. Finally on the 11th of February Mubarak resigned and was replaced by a military government promising elections later in the year. March 11: A magnitude 9.1 earthquake hits the east coast of Japan. The earthquake triggered a tsunami which devastated many coastal settlements and caused a nuclear melt down. Many in the international community have sent relief to Japan. But it will still be some years until the areas affected are fully restored. April 29th: An estimated 2 Billion people tune in to watch the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton of Britain. This was a historic event which showed the nation and others the future King and Queen of the United Kingdom. May 1st: President Obama of the United States announces the death of Osama bin Laden the leader of Al-Qaeda and believed to be responsible for terrorist attacks such as the terrible events of 9/11 and 7/7. Many people across the world feel as if they have been avenged. But the Taliban and Al-Qaeda promise revenge attacks on the West and it's allies. June-July: After being accused of hacking into the phones of British celebrities and politians as well as members of the Royal Family tabloid news papers in the UK were put on trial. Rupert Murdoch, the man in charge of News International was on attacked with a cream pie whilst on trial by a man named Johnny Marbles. The controvesy is still on going and more tabloids have been accused of phone hacking. July 22nd: Eight people were killed when a car bomb exploded outside of the Regjeringskvartalet government centre and a further 69 at Ut°ya in Norway. The international community was quick to show sympathy towards the victims and condemmed the perpertrator, Anders Bravik a right-wing extremeist. August 20-28: The Libyan government lead by Mummar Gaddafi falls as the Libyan rebels take Tripoli. Gaddafi was killed two months later in Sirte, his home town. September 15th: David Cameron and Nicholas Sarkozy, the Prime Minister of Great Britain and President of France are the first western leaders to vist the newly liberated Tripoli. This symbolises the begging of a new Libya. October 31st: the world population reaches 7 Billion. Is that a good or bad thing? November 29th: The British embassy in Tehran came under attack after sanctions were made by the British on Irans nuclear programme. The UK foreign secutary expelled all Iranian diplomats from the UK in retaliation. December 15: The US formally ends the war in Iraq after eight years of fighting and the deaths of many coalition, insurgent and civillian people. That concludes 2011. But there are many other stories I have not mentioned. For example: - The 2011 England riots. - Eurozone crisis - The death of Kim Jon-il - The end of NASAa shuttle programme. Next year looks interesting too. The London Olympics, Eurozone crisis and the conclusion to the Arab Spring will be very fascinating to look at. So do some resarch and you might learn a thing or two. Happy New Year from SG!
