Toa Lyrax - Self-Moc . . -Lyrax, Toa of Heavy Metals- Name: Lyrax Species: Toa Race: Onu-Toa Occupation: Warrior of Onu-Koro, Apprentice of Toa Necrium Title(s): Lyrax, Thrash, The Holy Demon, The Apprentice Alignment: Chaotic good Element: Heavy Metal Kanohi: Kanohi Hammethia, Mask of Heavy Metals Weapon(s): Armor Spikes, Scythe of Disintegration, Shortsword, Elemental Powers Theme(s): Descending Angel - The Misfits Bio: Toa Lyrax has had a dark and shrouded past, one that he is not comfortable talking about. As an Av-Matoran, Lyrax was an inventor. He created instruments of torture and destruction for the Toa, which were used to interrogate Makuta prisoners in the First Great War of Mata-Nui. During a raid on his village, Lyrax was taken hostage by an anonymous Dark Hunter. This agent of Makuta kept Lyrax as a slave and taught Lyrax all of his skills of evil, and used Lyrax’s instruments of torture on his own people and prisoners of war. Scarred, traumatized, and possessed by the evil around him, he lost every ounce of his former self, leaving him a sadistic and cruel. After months of devoted (and insane) allegiance to the Makuta and the Dark Hunter who captured him, he was welcomed into the Brotherhood of Makuta. For a time, he was involved with the Dark Hunters as a high-ranking assassin. For years, he murdered the Toa and matoran who defended Mara-Nui behind the front lines. Eventually, he was given the assignment to assassinate Toa Necrium, a powerful Onu-Toa. Lyrax was unsuccessful, and Necrium captured him and brought him back to the Toa stronghold. Necriun’s fellow Toa worked long and hard at returning Lyrax to his former state of an inventor and follower of Mata Nui. After years of hard, relentless assistance and psychological cleansing, Lyrax became one of Mata Nui’s followers again. But even after his rehabilitation, Lyrax still had taints of shadow within him. He was taken in by Necrium as an assistant in the Onu-Koro catacombs. There he worked alongside his savior Toa, tending to the dead and dying in their village. He spent many months learning the ways of his master, in everything from caretaking and preserving to combat and the path to becoming a Toa. Years after his return to Mata-Nui, the Makuta raided the island country, destroying many of the major cities. In the Onu-Koro raid, Lyrax fought alongside Toa Necrium, who was confronted by the same Dark Hunter who captured Lyrax in the First Great War. Necrium single-handedly fought the Dark Hunter, and lost his life in protecting Lyrax. After the raid, Necrium told Lyrax that he needed a successor, someone to take his place as protector and someone to care for the catacombs. Necrium released all of his energy into Lyrax, transforming him into a Toa. He then carried Necrium’s frail cadaver to an empty compartment in the catacombs, and constructed a small shrine in honor of his teacher and friend. Lyrax, now a Toa of Metals, protects the villages of Onu-Koro and watches over the dead in the tombs, much like his deceased maser. He is determined to kill the Dark Hunter who had destroyed his psyche and murdered Necrium, and will do anything to kill the agent personally. Lyrax is an intelligent character who tends to dwell on morbid and violent thoughts. He is slightly unstable mentally, but his insanity is an asset on the battlefield. He is a loner, and a fast and ruthless combatant. His ability to manipulate metals allows him to shape the battle into a way that suits him best. I'm pretty happy with the way the lower legs turned out. The upper leg design was taken almost directly from my Rashel moc. Very happy with the upper body. HEARTLIGHTS FTW!!! Close-up of Lyrax's head. Just an alternate upper body shot. The clip on his back was added so that he could be equipped with a wide range of weapons. His shortsword is generally attached to his back by the clip. Ahh, custom noggins. How I love thee. Further proof of the custom noggin. ...and he can cross his arms. LIKE A BOSS. His shortsword. Very simple. Like, simpler than the simplest of simple. Lyrax's main weapon is Necrium's former weapon, a Desintegration Scythe. The scythe is capable of cutting and destroying the very souls of Lyrax's enemies. Scythey goodness. Oh, Witch Doctor, I knew him well. (Finally got the Witch Doctor set for Christmas. Woot!) Height comparison with Lyrax's love interest, Toa Gaiam. Height comparison with the matoran Rilik. Farewell! -Afterword- I've finally finished my Self-Moc (or should I say, his first version)! After months of toiling in Procrastionationland and suffering Builder's Block, I finally came to a design that I was happy with. I knew what I wanted him to be about - heavy metals. This is not to say that Lyrax was inspired by heavy metal elements (like in the periodic table), but more of the musical genre, which is by far my favorite kind of music. So while I wanted Lyrax to be themed with a heavy metal approach on his design (chains, spikes, lots of black and dark red), I wanted to give him a practical application to the world of Bionicle. I've seen a number of builders apply one specific kind of element to their Toas or Makutas, but why not a group? Hence, Lyrax is the Toa of Heavy Metals, controlling all of the heaviest of metals known to matoran, Turaga, and Toa alike. If anybody wants to make their own version of Lyrax, just give me a heads-up. Special thanks to all of the great Bionicle builders out there who have inspired me to follow in their footsteps of Self-Mochood. Happy holidays, and a happy new year!
