DRAG U LA . Another great TV car, George Barris's DRAG U LA. If you don't know who George Barris is, have a look at my Munster Koach for a run-down of his work. The DRAG U LA came to be in the Munsters episode titled "Hot Rod Herman". After Herman Munster (the dad & Frankenstein type monster) looses his beloved Koach to another drag racer, his father-in-law (Grandpa Munster) builds the DRAG U LA. Probably the coolest thing about this rod is the fact that it is made out of a real coffin! It features the same engine as the Koach, that is a 289 ci Ford Cobra engine, but, instead of having 10 carbs it as twin 4 barrel carbs with a pair of awesome custom scoops. The final dimensions are, 70 x 32 x 17 & it contains 1368 pieces.
The hardest part of this moc was the air scoops, getting them to look just right was very hard. I had to play with a lot of different build designs before settling with the ones I have now.
The rollbar on the rear took a while to get done, aligning the male ends of the flex-rod was very difficult, but eventually I got it and it looks really good.
The interior was difficult. It's a straight racing interior, so there is not a lot of details to worry about. What made it difficult was the fact that there are a lot of replicas of the DRAG U LA and finding a pic of the original's interior was difficult. I did find one pic that looked legit so I used that one as my muse. It's the same story for the whole car actually, but I'm confident that I've accurately recreated the DRAG U LA in Lego
I really wanted to give this car an opening cockpit, but after playing with the design for a whole day I had to concede defeat :( From this angle you can see the steering rod.
The wheels and tyres amount to the same diameter, but because of the large profile tyres on the back they do look smaller. The coffin part of this car was easy to make but making it look like a coffin was the hard part.
The front suspension assembly was hard to get right, once again, because of all the different replicas getting around. It does look a bit flimsy, but with new pieces and if you don't play with it, it should hold. I'm quite pleased with the gas-lamp headlights.
The scoops are what make this moc. If I didn't get these correct, the whole look would've been ruined. Also from this angle, you can see that I didn't skimp on the engine. There is (as accurately as I could build at this scale) a 289ci Ford Cobra engine in there. It's blue with black rocker covers... there is, honest!
From this angle, you see the rear axel just sticks out from the side. I was surprised to learn that the real DRAG U LA doesn't have any suspension in the rear. From here you can also see the front grille in the front wall of the coffin. The side pipes were created to mimic the pipes from an old organ, in keeping with the gothic theme.
The interior is very zen. There is a steering wheel, a foot brake, accelerator and parachute lever, oh and a seat... that's it. Some gauges too, the interior of all the DRAG U LAs I found on the internet had a purple interior. I did want so much to put a bubble on the back of this moc but none existed, I did find one pic of the original DRAG U LA bubbleless and with a rollbar, so I settled for that instead. I'm very pleased with the overall look of the moc.
