SdKfz 6 . The SdKfz 6 was a half-track military vehicle used by the German Wehrmacht during the Second World War . The SdKfz 6 was designed to be used as the main towing vehicle for heavy artillery. However it proved far too expensive and was phased out in 1941 for more economic halftracks. Existing SdKfz 6's were maintained in the German army afterwards. The SdKfz 6 was a standard half-tracked vehicle, used for towing various artillery pieces and transporting anything up to fifteen people. The SdKfz 6 was produced from 1935 to 1943 by Buessing-NAG and Daimler-Benz. Some 3660 were produced from 1939 to 1943 and were utilized in the same role as lighter SdKfz 11. The SdKfz 6 was heavier and more expensive than SdKfz 11, while its performance was not much better According to German documentation, the cost of single Sd.Kfz.6 was 30000 RM, compared to 22000 RM for SdKfz 11. The SdKfz 6 would be replaced by the more economic SdKfz 7. Note the 15 cm sFH 18 howitzer behind it. A varient of the SdKfz 6 was the SdKfz 6/2, officially known by the German army as the 3.7cm Flak 36 auf Selbstfahrlafette. As The SdKfz 6/2 was a standard SdKfz 6 halftrack mounted with special superstructure to allow installation of fully traversible anti-aircraft gun, in this case the 3.7cm Flak 36. This provided mechanized units with an AA defense that could keep up with the columns. The most difficult aspect of this build was actually the gun. It was really hard to make it accurate to the real thing and still obey the laws of physics A second varient was the SdKfz 6/3. This vehicles was standard SdKfz 6 mounted with an armored superstructure at the rear, housing captured Soviet 76.2mm M1936 field gun. As vast stores of the gun's ammunition had been captured following Operation Barbarossa, it was only logical that the ever efficient Germans would put the shells to good use. Only 9 vehicles were modified this way. They were designated as 7.62cm Pak 36(r) auf 5t Zugkraftwagen, nicknamed by the troops "Diana" . From January to February of 1942, all were issued to 605th Panzerjaegerabteilung serving in North Africa. Specs (SdKfz 6): Weight - 9 tons Length - 6.325 m Width - 2.2 m Height - 2.48 m Crew - 2 w/13 passengers Engine - 115hp Maybach NL 54 Range - 316 km (road), 158 km (off-road) Speed - 50 km/h
