NCC-150 Daedalus (Part 2 WIP) . Welcome back to the Daedalus starship development! I had some serious issues with LDD crashing, which I was finally able to solve by breaking up the construction to limit the number of connected pieces in a single file. Over 20 000 connected pieces and LDD starts behaving badly. Still, I'm quite pleased with the way things have turned out. The first image is one of Matt Jeffries' early passes at the design of the Enterprise for the original series. Later on this sketch inspired the Daedalus class design, which was named in an episode of Next Generation (the Essex from "Power Play"). Other ships which had been mentioned in TOS by name only were retroactively assigned to that class (such as the Horizon from "A Piece of the Action" and the Archon from "The Return of the Archons"). .
I've basically completed the forward section, so here's a cutaway of that area. A few statistics: The diameter of the sphere is 112 studs. The whole forward section is 184 studs long and the aft section is 314 studs. The warp engines by themselves are 400 studs long (taking the brick orientation into account). And finally, the entire ship length is 552 studs. So, in other words, not really a practical MOC to build… :(
The Bridge is the same as before, only now I've added equipment in the surrounding bay for the upper sensor platform.
Deck 2 is also the same, except that I've now added all the portholes. I tried to place them according to the schematic I uploaded before, and this helped determined some of the internal layout.
Deck 3 contains the main mess hall and galley. The rest of the deck is taken up by cabins. I figured that the canon crew complement of 229 makes sense for a 15-deck ship. It could take 50-75 people to actually run the ship at any given time, multiplied by three or four shifts. Then add specialists, security, officers, and you can easily reach the full complement. So I've devoted lots of room to living space!

Deck 4 is entirely devoted to crew cabins.
Deck 5 houses the transporter room, which I wanted to make a lot bigger than the off-corridor transporter we see on the NX-01. This room is big enough for a diplomatic reception or an armed escort, and also features equipment lockers and EVA suits. Next door is a conference room. The computer core just forward of the turboshaft is three decks in height and is duplicated in the aft section.
Deck 6 is again mostly cabins, but it also features a large crew lounge reminiscent of Ten-Forward on the Enterprise-D. Even with the mess halls I felt there ought to be an additional social space with a good view. The room with a red door behind the stairs is the quartermaster's office.
Deck 7 has port and starboard airlocks, again with EVA suit lockers.
Deck 8 is the security deck with the forward armoury, which has a single central torpedo launcher flanked by phaser emitters. In the middle of the deck is a brig with four cells, and the chief of security's office is behind the stairs.
On the NX-01 they were carting torpedoes around on racks so I copied that idea. In hindsight I should probably have made the launcher longer though. The flat torpedoes are photon torpedoes and the round ones are nuclear. Here a technician has removed a nuclear warhead to affix a scientific probe in its place. You can also see a detainee chilling in the brig.
Deck 9 is the medical facility. Fitness and training areas are also on this level, as is the ship's laundry. At the far end of the connecting tube you can see the impulse engines.

On the port side is the ship's laundry. Hey, somebody's got to do it! Aft of that is the cardio room with treadmills.
The Navigational Deflector Assembly fills the bulk of decks 10-12, and is fully enclosed within the hull. Some people have revised the ship design by making the dish appear externally, as we typically see on Federation starships. However, that isn't canon, and I rather like the idea that it can be internal. There are other starships that don't have a visible deflector such as the Miranda and Constellation classes. Deck 10 also houses some science labs and environmental monitoring, as well as another conference room and a lecture hall, either of which can be altered to suit any particular need.
Deck 11 is mostly science labs, particularly high-energy physics and astrophysics. The green cylinders are the auxiliary batteries.
Deck 12 houses the navigation deflector control rooms, and other stations related to navigation and deflector power usage. There is a no-step zone around the emitter, and port/starboard hatches for access to Deck 13.
Deck 13 houses the lower sensor platform. It's only full height in the middle, hence the trapdoors.
I also made some improvements to the separation line. The impulse engines now match what I've designed for the aft section. I still have lots to do on the aft section, a lot of which is taken up by the landing deck, hangar and cargo bays. I've completed the exterior hull, most of engineering, and the hangar doors. I also have the computer core, turbolift and stairs in place. Stay tuned!
