I have developed this marketing plan in order to market myself for full time employment at First Farmers and Merchants Bank in my hometown of Columbia Tennessee. The purpose of developing this plan is to set and achieve objectives to advance myself within the bank to a full time position. I will rely on my own skills as a competitive advantage to help me achieve this goal. These skills, as well as the competitive advantage they generate are discussed in detail later in this plan. I intend to implement this plan over the rest of this year and into the next as a work as a part time relief teller when I come home from college.
My supervisors at the bank will be monitoring my performance as I work my part time job. I will focus strongly on my interaction with bank customers and fellow coworkers, as well as carrying out my job responsibilities as accurately as possible. I will focus and hard work and presenting myself as an asset to the bank. By performing to the best of my ability, I hope to receive a full time job offer from the bank when I complete my master’s degree in August of 2016.
By May of 2016 I will have graduated from Freed-Hardeman with my Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, and my August of 2016 I will have earned my Masters of Business Administration in Accounting. This degree will go a long way to show my employer than I am dedicated to finishing an important goal (however trying the journey may be) and that I will show that same dedication to in my future work at the bank. My time at Freed-Hardeman has given valuable teamwork and problem solving experiences. My involvement in social activities at school provide a foundation for interacting well with others. This can serve me as I deal with the public at the bank.
I have worked at First Farmers and Merchants Bank since May of 2014 as a relief teller. Although this is one of the lowest positions in the bank, I can use it as a “foot in the door” towards a greater position in the future. My applying myself, working diligently, and doing more than what is expected from me at my position, I will be able to stand out among other coworkers. My work has taught me to be a team player; much more can be accomplished by working together.
First Farmers and Merchants Bank is one on the largest financial institutions in Middle Tennessee with assets of over one million dollars in eight counties. It is a community oriented bank, with almost all of its employees native to the middle Tennessee region. There is a type of family atmosphere; everyone knows everyone and the customers are well acquainted with the employees of the bank. This adds to the appeal of personal relationship banking that First Farmers has created.
The bank employs about two hundred full time workers. As with any business, but especially for banks, trimming down personnel is one of the main ways to reduce expenses and increase profit. First Farmers is no exception. When someone retires, they are not replace; others simply add that work to their own responsibilities. Outside people are rarely brought into the bank, and almost all openings are fulfilled by promotion within the bank. This is good news for myself however; seeing as I have been employed for over thirteen months now.
Despite bank’s limited hiring practices, new positions are going to be necessary. The bank is experiencing rapid growth, especially in the northern regions of middle Tennessee. Due to the newly completed highway 840, the areas to the South, East, and most recently to the West of Nashville are experiencing tremendous and rapid growth. First Farmers has taken advantage of this growth and potential for opportunities by opening three new locations in Williamson and Davidson counties. This new growth has generated need for skilled managers and accountants to help deal with the increased load from these new locations. I am confident that I can help fill that need.
In 2008, the economy took a downturn that devastated banks all across the country. Many banks went under and were bought out. According to the FDIC’s website, 230 banks across America failed between 2008 and 2010 alone. This is a frightening statistic as a hopeful banker. Economic conditions over the past several have not favored the creation of new jobs, especially for college graduates. According to an article on Forbes.com, 60% percent of college graduates can’t find a job in their field after graduation. Fortunately though, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accountants held 1,275,400 jobs in 2012. This number has only increased since then, and the demand for accountants in today’s market is rising
• Determined and hard worker. Dedicated to reaching desired goals set by employer.
• Employed by current employer for over a year, and they typically only fill positions by promoting within the bank.
• Good relationship with many important officers in the bank, including the Execute Vice President who gave me my current job.
• Extensive knowledge of the banks history and customer base; having been a customer of the bank all my life.
• Excellent communicator and fast learner. Will have a master’s degree in accounting at age 22.
• The bank is increasing is presence in the northern region of middle Tennessee, causing the need for more workers.
• The demand for accountants in today’s market is on the rise as service jobs increase. The bank will need more individuals to manage the new money in the north.
• The current economic conditions are looking better, and employment is on the rise.
• Several other banks in the area (including Bank of America) have been forced to leave due to a several conditions, giving First Farmers more customers to attract.
• The bank almost always hires from within.
• My knowledge of many computer and technological programs is limited.
• My GPA of 3.45 could be better.
• I have not taken the CPA exam. • The bank is not eager to hire new employees. They are always trying to trim back on expenses and trying to do as much work as possible with as little people as possible.
• There are many other new college graduates with degrees in businesses seeking employment with the bank, especially in the growing northern region.
Analysis of the matrix:
I believe that my position is favorable towards employment, and I believe that my strengths outweigh my weaknesses and the opportunities exceed the threats for time being. If anything, these weakness and threats will motivate me to improve my position to better present myself as a candidate for employment with the bank. The threats are worrisome; the current state of the economy is causing many banks to fight for survival. First Farmers is not immune to these threats, and actions have been taken to reduce expenses to boost profits, and unfortunately this meets cutting back on personnel. I believe that my strengths will outweigh the threats that lie before me.
The link between my strengths and the opportunities give me a distinct competitive advantage among other candidates. I believe that my greatest advantage lies in the fact that the bank hires team members from within their own organization. I’ve been employed there for over a year and travelled to most of the branches and gotten to know many people within the bank. I go to church with the executive vice president and know his family well. I’ve gotten to know many people in many different departments. I think is the strongest advantage I have over other candidates looking for work.
My strategy in this marketing plan is to demonstrate and reinforce my skills to my target market. This must be done by applying myself in my current position, by furthering my education to the fullest extent, and building relationships with current employees. This will help me separate myself from the competition.
Marketing Goals and Objectives
The following goals and objectives are derived from examining the SWOT and situational analysis to determine my competitive advantage and how to best utilize said advantages to achieve the desired outcome of landing a job with First Farmers and Merchants Bank and successfully market myself to my employer.
Marketing Goal- To receive an offer of employment from First Farmers and Merchants Bank in the latter half of the year 2016.
Marketing Objective 1- To graduate with my master’s degree by the summer of 2016.
In today’s day and age a master’s degree is almost essential to separate yourself from the countless other applicants to a position. Business are always looking for that extra qualification to give them confidence that they are choosing the right man. A master’s degree is more than just an extra qualification or proof of knowledge; it shows that an individual is dedicated and will finish an important goal. The writing of this strategy is part of this goal, and I can measure my progress by the classes that I complete.
Marketing Objective 2- To develop the connections and relationships necessary to be offered a full time job at the bank.
Connections with important officials is an important part of being hired for a job. This makes the process much easier, and knowing someone on the inside who can recommend you for a position is an important aspect of job hunting. I believe that I am well on the way to this goal, I’ve made friends with many people in various branches and some at the main office. These meaningful connections will go a long way in the future.
Primary Target Market:
My primary target market is First Farmer’s and Merchant’s Bank. Their accounting department will be needing more help with the expansion of the bank to the northern regions of middle Tennessee.
My product strategies focuses on the benefits that I can offer my employer. This starts with the level of dedication and quality of work that I offer. I think it is important to try your best at everything you do in life, especially in work. I’ve worked hard in my current job, and I’m working hard in school to achieve my goal. Hopefully my employer will see my efforts as a benefit to them in the future.
