Roman Army 2008 . Recently landed at Pagnorvaria is a group of four Contubernium and auxiliary troops coming to relieve the troops currently at the temporary timber fort. At the head of this small detachment of troops is the centurion, followed by a small group of cavalry then the aquilifer, signifer and cornicen. Next are the four contubernium’s and at the back the auxiliary archers. (The Roman Army, which was responsible for one of the world’s largest empires, was divided into legions, which consisted of approximately 5,000 men. Each legion was divided into 10 cohorts, each cohort was divided into 6 centuries, each century was divided into 10 contubernium’s of 8 men who marched, fought, worked and camped together. The century was commanded by a Centurion who carried a vine stick, and had its own standard or badge carried by a Signifier.) . At the head is the Centurion carrying his wooden vine stick accompanied by the officer from the cavalry. Behind the Calvary are the Aquilifer, The Signifer and the cornicen, just behind then come the officers and the main body of the army. Here’s the first Contubernium And last of all the auxiliary archers Here we can see a Roman soldier with his shield and one of his javelins. He’s wearing his wool tunic and leather breeches around his legs and his breast plate. His shield (scutum) is curved to fit around his body. Here’s one of the auxiliary troops, he’s a non-Roman citizen and has been recruited from Syria. His bow is deadly over a range of 400 metres. This Calvary man (and his colleagues) has come from modern day Croatia, from a tribe which has a good tradition of horsemanship. He has an oval shield and a spear, which was often used to stab downwards. Here’s the Aquilifer carrying the Legion's Standard. The Signifer carries the spear, which is decorated with medallions and is the banner that the men would rally around in battle. Here’s the cornicen, (AKA the Horn blower) he works with the Signifer drawing the attention of the men and helps issue commands from the officers in battle.
